Write By The Sea

Their work connects beautifully with Write by the Sea, Argyll's Secret Coast's very first Book Festival.

I recently had a lovely catch up and a cup of tea with Chris and Michaela Goan. Based in Innellan, Chris and Michaela are a husband and wife team, Chris a poet and wood worker, Michaela a ceramicist. Together they create beautiful pieces incorporating both clay and words. I have known them both since taking over the gallery three years ago and it has been lovely working with them and getting to know them better. They have produced some gorgeous new work for the gallery which I am including in the current redisplay.

Their work connects beautifully with Write by the Sea, Argyll's Secret Coast's very first Book Festival, which will be taking place on 14th & 15th March in Tighnabruaich.

I took a selection of the work into Tighnabruaich and Kilmodan primary schools in order to introduce the children to a competition as part of the Write by the Sea festival.  All the children have been challenged to write and illustrate a poem based on the theme of sea, coast and water.  Chris Goan has kindly agreed to judge the competition and Michaela has offered to put the winning entry into clay.  The lucky winning children will also receive book vouchers from the fabulous Book Point, and all entries will be displayed throughout the Book Festival.

It was wonderful to see the children truly inspired by the ceramic work which I showed them and they had so many questions and thoughts!  I really enjoy working with the local schools!

Write by the Sea promises to be a weekend of salty tales and poetry and prose shaped by sky, sea and land.  The book festival is organised by the community, and promises to be a friendly and intimate affair.  The talks, workshops and events will be taking place in different venues across the area.  Visit www.writebythesea.co.uk for more information

Also as part of the festival the gallery will be exhibiting a slightly unusual and perhaps unexpected artwork by a new local artist, Kate Franklin.  Kate, of Northern Lights Cakery, crafts the most exquisite cakes   that truly are beautiful to behold (and eat!)   For Write by the Sea Kate has agreed to create a sea themed masterpiece which will be raffled during the festival weekend.

The gallery will play host to the opening event of Write by the Sea with a Preview of our brand new, first of the season exhibition, Light by the Sea.
